On Friday, we checked out the condo, which was awesome, but too far. So I called the lady who owns the apartment in Ellwood, but it turns out that she changed her mind and is trying to find people who can live in the apartment now. UGH. I asked her if she can call me back if anything changes, but I doubt that anything will change. So no we are back to square one... AGAIN. Whatever. I am over apartment hunting... for now.
On another note, I finally got to go to the IV Co-op on Friday before and after we visited the condo. It was pretty much awesome. The Co-op is a small market in IV that specializes in organic food and produce that is locally grown in Santa Barbara. I wanted to buy everything there. Haha. Anyway, we found vegan brownie mix and, since I promised Trang that I'd bake her vegan brownies, I bought it. It cost $7.95 for a package that only fit half my 9inch baking pan, so these brownies better be worth it. Fortunately, they were. Trang bought vegan chocolate frosting and we substituted margarine (since we didn't know if it was vegan) with an avocado. Yeah, I know, that sounds kind of gross, but it actually worked. You couldn't taste the avocado in the frosting, but you could see the little chunks of it.
Kind of looks like poop... haha.

We also watched Zack and Miri Make A Porno on Friday night, which was pretty interesting. Kind of graphic, but the love story was pretty sweet. Hehe. I also managed to finish my field notes for Anthro. Thank goodness.
On Saturday, I woke up pretty late and missed brunch, so I had to eat ramen in my room. Yum. I spent most of the day playing Sims (sooo addicting). Later on, I met up with Trang, Melody, and Skyler and went to Trader Joe's and Albertsons to buy food for the Oscars party. We ended up buying lots of stuff for ourselves, too. Haha. By the time we got back from grocery shopping, it was past 8pm and dinner was over. So Emi and I decided to make food. We made pork gyoza and rice. Yummm. I wish I took my camera to the kitchen and took pictures. Later on, Trang came over and we watched Changeling. It was a really good movie. There were some parts that were disturbing and it was pretty lengthy, but I loved the story. If you haven't seen it, go watch it. Now time for some random pictures from Saturday night:

I ended up sleeping at 6am and woke up at a little past 1pm on Sunday. I had brunch with Daniela and went back to my room to try and do a little homework. I managed to write one sentence for my Theater paper and then I had to go downstairs to start baking and set up for the Oscars party. We baked vegan vanilla cake using cake mix from Trader Joe's and substituted eggs with vegan egg replacement, used soy milk instead of whole milk, and used vegan butter instead of regular butter.
Vegan butter... it kind of looks like
vanilla ice cream

I also made chocolate frosting by simmering vegan butter and soy milk and then melting semi-sweet chocolate chips into the mixture. I did the same thing when I made white chocolate frosting. We were in a time crunch, so we quickly set up the chips and salsa, opened up the bottles of sparkling apple cider, and made punch (thanks Noho) right before the Oscars started.
A lot of people really liked the punch
About half an hour after the Oscars started, Emi and I took the cake out of the oven to let it cool. We stuck it in the fridge and took it out a few minutes later because people wanted cake. Unfortunately, we took it out a little too early and the cake wasn't completely cooled. It fell apart when we put it on a cookie sheet, so we just poured the chocolate frosting and drizzled the white chocolate frosting on top. People didn't really care and actually liked how the cake looked. Oh well.
When we brought the cake into the lounge, one guy was just staring at the cake in awe. I didn't know whether he thought the cake looked good or not, but he just kept laughing when he saw it. It was pretty funny because he asked, "were you guys high when you made that?" He then stood up to get a plate and when he tasted the cake, he wanted more. Everyone actually enjoyed the cake and it was pretty good. It was funny when we told everyone that it was vegan because it tasted like it wasn't. It was pretty moist and the chocolate wasn't overpowering. It was a nice balance of chocolate and vanilla. I could tell that Trang was really happy because, being vegan, she rarely ever gets to eat cake and she ate a lot of the cake (and brownies) we made.

Irrelevant: bye bye punch

Overall, I think this weekend was a pretty good one, despite the fact that the right hinge on my phone broke and I am forced to use the touch screen instead of the QWERTY keyboard. Now I have to finish my Theater paper which is due on Tuesday and catch up on reading for Anthro since I barely ordered my book online last Friday (I should be on chapter 4 by now). BLAH. I just hope that I get my book soon... I have my Anthro discussion later on today and I have to make up an excuse as to why I haven't done the reading/don't have my book. Oh well. I should probably go to sleep soon. It's past 3am and I have a class at 8am. UGH. Bye.
dang. You guys have lots of snacks.
ReplyDeleteyou spiked the punch didn't yah?
vegan butter looks yummy.
hahahha. I would have never guessed that the first picture of the cake was cake.
